Benchmark Foam EPS for Frost-Protected Shallow Foundations
One building concept that offers lower construction costs and increased energy efficiency is frost-protected shallow foundations (FPSF). This technique allows contractors to save on material and excavating costs while giving homeowners long-term energy efficiency and protection from frost heave.
According to a National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) study performed for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, FPSF allows builders to construct a structurally sound foundation at a lower cost by incorporating strategically placed insulation to raise the frost depth around a building. Using expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam insulation offers a steady R-Value at a less expensive cost to purchase. EPS is available in almost any size and thickness and can be custom-cut to fit any building plan – a benefit not achievable by other insulation materials.
Benchmark Foam provides several products that can be used in FPSF building, including Type II and Type IX EPS. (Click here for the physical properties of Type II and Type IX.) To learn pricing options , call our team at 800-658-3444 or 605-886-8084.
