Making environmentally-sound decisions throughout the manufacturing process is a priority at Benchmark Foam. One of the raw material suppliers in the expanded polystyrene (EPS) industry, NOVA Chemicals, shares an interest in sustainability. From the raw material, Benchmark manufactures expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products, many of which are used for residential and commercial insulation applications. Some Benchmark products include Prefirred, an insulation used for finishing exterior or interior concrete or block walls. Roofing insulation, insulated concrete forms (ICF) , and Thermo-Snap™ (patent pending) insulation panels for in-floor heat systems are also manufactured by Benchmark Foam. A recent edition of the NOVA Chemicals’ Focus! newsletter reveals the results of recent studies on expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. One study reveals that EPS foam insulation reduces the carbon footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing energy savings.  (To read the entire article, click here.)  “Greenhouse gas reductions and energy savings are quantified in this study of using EPS foam insulation in single family residential construction, which shows dramatic results in both the U.S. and Canada. The analysis compared the use of EPS foam insulation to the energy used and emissions generated in the production, processing and transportation of this material. It was conducted for the EPS Molders Association by Franklin Associates.”

“…energy savings are not only substantial but also rapid, providing a 100 percent payback in as little as three months after occupancy. These results present a powerful case for the significant contributions of EPS insulation in making homes more efficient, comfortable and environmentally sustainable. For example, the analysis finds an energy payback period of less than 17 months and a recapture of greenhouse gas emissions in less than 10 months for adding EPS insulation to America’s homes.”
