Frequently Asked Questions About Benchmark Foam
What exactly does Benchmark Foam manufacture?
We manufacture expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam and other specialty plastics. EPS is a white foam material you see in packaging, building insulation and various other applications. Our facility in Watertown, South Dakota, has been producing these materials since 1988.
What products does Benchmark Foam offer?
Our product line covers a broad range. On the building and construction side, we offer different types of EPS insulation for roofs, walls and under concrete slabs. This includes architectural shapes used in exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS), roofing insulation and high-density EPS for commercial and residential insulation needs.
We also manufacture custom-molded packaging to protect products during shipping. Other offerings include dock floats, geofoam (a lightweight fill material used in construction projects) and storm shelters.
What makes EPS foam a good material for packaging?
Molded EPS works well for packaging because of its unique structure. The material consists of roughly 98% air, making it lightweight, which helps keep shipping costs down. At the same time, its closed-cell structure creates a matrix that absorbs and disperses energy from impacts.
When a package is dropped or bumped, the foam compresses in a controlled way to protect the contents. It is also moisture-resistant and provides thermal insulation, which matters for items that are sensitive to certain temperatures. EPS can be molded to fit the shape of a product to prevent movement during transit.
What industries use Benchmark Foam’s custom packaging?
Our custom EPS packaging serves industries where product protection is essential. This includes electronics, where foam provides shock absorption and static protection for sensitive devices. Medical device manufacturers use our products to protect surgical robotics arms and other instruments. Aerospace companies rely on protective packaging for shipping delicate avionics and other components.
How does EPS foam work as building insulation?
EPS insulation works by trapping air within its closed-cell structure, which resists the transfer of heat. We produce different grades of EPS, such as Type I and Type II, that specify different densities. Type I EPS has a compressive strength of about 10 psi, making it suitable for walls or certain roofing applications. Type II EPS has a higher density and a compressive strength of 15 psi, making it the better choice for under concrete slabs, foundation walls and bridge embankments. The higher density also gives it slightly improved thermal resistance.
Is EPS foam environmentally friendly?
EPS is generally considered a sustainable option for several reasons. It is completely recyclable and can be processed into new products. The material itself is lightweight, which means less fuel is required to transport it, lowering the associated carbon footprint. Benchmark Foam also offers eps360°, a product made from 100% recycled EPS.
What is the on-time guarantee?
We offer an On-Time Guarantee by discounting the invoice by 10 percent if your product does not arrive by the agreed-upon delivery date. This guarantee reflects our commitment to timely service and reliability.
Where is Benchmark Foam located?
Our headquarters and manufacturing facility are at 401 Pheasant Ridge Drive in Watertown, South Dakota.
Does Benchmark Foam serve customers outside South Dakota?
Yes. While we are headquartered in South Dakota, our products reach a wide range of customers across the United States.
